There are many myths about septic systems, but nothing can beat the fact - if a septic system is properly operated and maintained, it can provide many years of trouble free service.  If neglected, however, a septic system is likely to fail, leaving a homeowner with unsanitary back-ups, over-flows, and expensive repairs.

                                                      The Septic System

The septic system is a two-part sewage treatment and disposal system buried in the ground, composed of a septic tank and leaching system.  The sewage flows by gravity or with the help of a pump station from the septic tank where the larger particles are removed and some decomposition takes place and, then, into the leaching system where it soaks into the ground.

                                                            Precautions

If your system has filters at the baffles the filters should be cleaned at least yearly.  We recommend in the fall to lessen the chances of problems during the winter.  You can simply accomplish this by losing off any sludge thet may have built up on them.  The filters will need to be replaced periodically depending on their ability to continue being cleaned.  Don't flush:  dental floss, scoopable litter, or diaper wipes in to your septic system.

A new state recommendation is the cover be no more than 6-inches below ground surface.  This can be accomplished with a riser.

                                                       Septic Tank Mapping

Measure and record distances to the covers of your septic tank and to the corner of your leaching system, using corners of the house, garage or other permanent fixture.  As long as the distances are correct, do not be concerned about whesther or not your drawing is to scale.  Keep a record in a safe, logical place.  An idea is in a plastic bag fixed to the main pipe out of the house or taped inside the door to tyour electrical box.   Other important information to have is the designers name, contact number, as well as the installers name and contact number.
